"I have owned a Superscope 207LP for almost 30 years. Due to changes in technology, I finally had to replace the unit. Because the old Superscope provided so much assistance for my students, and for me as a musician and teacher, I needed another machine that would provide the same, or even better. I investigated a variety of brands, but my ultimate decision was made due to the facilities provided by the Superscope 340. The Superscope 340 is just what I needed. I don’t need to carry microphones with me as the inbuilt mic is so sensitive and the output of the inbuilt speakers are more than adequate. My young clarinet students, who always play ‘flat’, can now play with the CD accompanying their tutor book due to the ability of the Superscope to reduce pitch without changing tempo. I can use the inbuilt tuner to make them aware of how flat they are performing and use it as a tool to get them to correct their embouchure to reach A440 in their performance and to correct their intonation.
My Kip McGrath Education Centre senior students now use the Superscope as a facility for proof reading, whilst the juniors are using the Superscope to record their reading. My maths students are using it to record the times tables and loop their recording so that they can listen to their own recording of the tables over and over again in the car. They appreciate their own voice rather than the ‘corny’ sung tables available on the commercial market. For me, the 340 is wonderful! I am saying this without investigating its full potential - such as line in, external mic, etc. There are so many facilities available on this very compact machine that can assist students, musicians and teachers of a variety of disciplines.

"I am writing to tell you how thrilled I am with my recent purchase of the PSD340. The Superscope is an invaluable tool in the classroom and I have used it in every conceivable manner. This is a statement from a person who is technologically challenged. I am a full-time primary music teacher. I conduct two choirs, accompany a string ensemble and I also help co-ordinate the string camps in the Redlands.
I purchased the Superscope mainly for its capacity to record straight to CD from an internal or external source, but have found many other functions on this machine invaluable. During string rehearsal I use the tuner (no more children at the piano thumping out an A) and the metronome function. I have recorded keyboards, for choir accompaniment and microphones using the external recording function and I have recorded tapes straight to CD. In the classroom I use the tempo and key change options all the time. I can change the tempo of an accompaniment without changing the key or the key without changing the tempo. How incredibly awesome! I can even record to CD with the changes I have programmed into the Superscope. Our school put on a musical for the very first time last year and I recorded all the music from external and internal sources in the order needed for rehearsals and plugged the Superscope straight into the hall's PA system. How did I ever function without this incredible, lightweight tool?
The support I received from Binary Designs since my purchase has been exemplary. I was able to book a time for a consultant to come out to explain all the functions of the Superscope and I have also found that the accompanying handbook was written in clear and concise terms and the diagrams were easy to follow.
The Superscope should be a basic resource for every music teacher!

"Since acquiring the Superscope recorder students and staff have enjoyed getting to know the capabilities of this device. So far we have recorded a staff member playing Cor Anglais backed by the Russian National Orchestra as a backing track. This was a first try to see that it all worked easily. In five minutes flat Borodin's Polovstian dances were successfully recorded to Cd. This confirmed the user-friendly aspects of the Superscope.
We have recorded several student compositions for the Q. S.A. Senior Music subject for inclusion in their assessment folios which was the initial reason for buying the Superscope.
In our Karaoke activities afternoons students have used the voice reduction facility to use their favourite Cd as backing for their own vocal performances.
We have adjusted the pitch and tempo on the National Anthem to suit the particular vocal range for a student to sing at the Anzac Day Ceremony.
Singer Bebienne Asdillo has used voice reduction and tempo adjustment to create a backing Cd for a live performance in our recent "Move It or Blues It " Music and Dance performance evening.
The Year 8 Orchestra and Year 9 Music classes have all recorded solo performances to Cd so they can hear and judge their own performance skills. One student took his recording home as a birthday gift for his mother.
The school Rock bands are eagerly planning to record several new songs they are working on.
The portability and ease of use makes the Superscope a viable tool for almost any class."
- Mark Turpin, Music Coordinator, Coombabah State High School, Gold Coast, Queensland, 2007

"We LOVE the Superscope! Until now, the process of recording our students onto CD has been a long and often problematic process. Superscope enables us to make quick, good quality recordings in a variety of situations: classroom performances, demonstration recordings of repertoire for students by instrumental tutors, concerts, extra-curricular ensemble recordings which can be used for feedback and self-assessment - the opportunities are endless! The other fantastic thing about Superscope is that it is so easy to use. It has been one of our best purchases yet!"
- Susan Gouchee, Director of Music, Canterbury College, Queensland, 2005

"I have recently acquired a Superscope PSD340 music practice and CD recording system. As an enthusiastic pianist with a passion for jazz I had been looking for something that would enhance my capacity to transcribe solos and other elements of musical performance recorded on CD's. This is relatively simple to do without anything other than a CD player for slower or more familiar lines but for very fast or complex solos it can be somewhat more difficult. If you have a tape recorder with two speeds on it (eg 7.5 ins per sec and 3.75 ins per sec) then you can record at the higher speed and play back at the lower speed. The solo will then be heard at half its normal tempo and you are then in a better position to interpret it. The drawback is that the music is also heard one octave lower and this can often provide an alternative impediment to understanding what is going on. Also many tape recorders are not equipped to start and finish playback at defined points so you can spend a lot of time just getting the tape into the right position each time you want to re-hear something.

The beauty of the Superscope is that you can play back a CD between two specified points at a speed up to 75% slower than the recorded tempo without any pitch change. I have found that this dramatically improves my ability to transcribe difficult performances and hence understand the musical intent of the performer. If you understand what is going on you are better able to utilise similar ideas in your own performances. There are various software packages that enable tempo changing without pitch shifting but, unless you have a computer with an adequate sound system beside your piano, these are much less convenient to use.

Of course the Superscope enables you to do quite a bit more than I have mentioned above. If you wish, it will change the pitch or key of the recorded audio up to plus or minus an octave without changing the tempo. This is useful for playing along with recorded music in a key different to that in which the audio was recorded. Alternatively it can be used to tune the audio to your instrument rather than tuning your instrument to the audio. I have mentioned changing the tempo down by up to 75% without changing pitch - it can also be increased by up to 50%. Also key and tempo can be changed simultaneously. Depending on how vocals are recorded, the Superscope is capable of reducing them. This can allow a singer to treat the Superscope as a backing system with reduced "interference" from the recorded vocalist. Other features useful for practicing music include a built-in metronome and a built-in chromatic tuner. The Superscope can be connected in to powered speakers or into an external amplifier or can be operated using its own speaker.

One of the features I find very useful is the direct recording capability. The Superscope has built in microphone preamplifiers or you can use the built-in condenser microphone. Since it has two independently operable CD players, one of which is also a CD writer (CD-R "write once" or CD-RW "rewriteable") you can record yourself directly to CD playing along with music already recorded if you wish. Note that the audio from the CD player may be routed into the recording system via a Digital In so quality is not degraded. A teacher would also find the recording capability helpful in providing students with feedback of their performances.

To put it succinctly, the Superscope PSD340 is marvellous device and any serious musician will quickly discover how useful it is."
- John Curtis, Jazz pianist, Melbourne, Victoria, 2005

"I have now been using the PSD Superscope at Morayfield East State School and Morayfield State High School for the past twelve months.

This recording device has proved to be more valuable than I ever expected. I have found that beginner students don't relate to playing at an even speed, but once they have heard themselves and try to tap along to their own performance they immediately appear to grasp the concept of playing at an even speed. Rewritable CD's have been the best to use.

The CD's supplied with Standard of Excellence are performed too fast for the beginner student. This machine allows the tempo to be slowed down to a comfortable tempo for individual students.

The voice reduction has proved to be an asset for vocalists to practice and perform at school performances. Students can practice first with the vocal line in to give confidence, then use the voice reduction button and sing with the backing only.

The condenser microphones that can be purchased with Superscope are excellent for recording bands and choirs, the reproduction is of an excellent quality, so this enables instructors to make a recording of the year's work and students can have a copy to take home. This is not in breach of copyright."
- Ken McCallum, Queensland Instrumental Music Instructor, 2005

"Using the Superscope, I have made recordings of piano solo, vocal and instrumental performances and the result is really outstanding. The Superscope CD Recorder has been an excellent investment. Choir directors have found their CD rehearsal tracks most useful and students have enjoyed the experience of reviewing their rehearsal sessions and helping with preparation for upcoming exams, eisteddfods and recitals."
- Peter Crane (Accompanist, Brisbane, Queensland)

"With a lot of pressure on keeping evidence of progress, we now face a battle on actually being able to record speaking. In previous years, we grabbed the tape recorder and away we went. Then came the trendy new tape recorders, which are wonderful, but:

  • don't have a counter and
  • don't have built in microphones. Add to that, that to purchase blank audio tapes, you need to go to a specialty shop; the tape recorder is well on its way out.

"I haven't made the jump to I-pods etc. and I believe they are being used in some schools. As we are a laptop school, I was advised to use the recording function on my laptop but I didn't want to have to lug around my laptop nor have the students use my laptop in small groups. I looked around and found a fabulous answer. It's a CD recorder. It functions exactly the same as a cassette recorder, but uses CDs and as such is very portable.

Better yet, the clarity of the recording is far superior. The inbuilt microphones are much more sensitive than the old tape recorders, and you can also burn a copy of your recording for the student or keep it on file as your evidence. You can keep many individual tracks on the one CD, thus meaning you can easily find the right student to mark and go straight to it, as well as compiling a continuation of student progress. Students could easily use it in class and what is great for our school is that you can record some dialogues with native speakers and use them in the traditional sense of listening comprehensions. Even make copies of your created dialogues for your students to practice!!

I found this item through the net and would highly recommend the product. I was able to obtain it through Binary Designs Pty Ltd in Queensland. Karen Henderson is the person I was dealing with, and not only was it easy but prompt. Many music departments use this product, but as yet LOTE teachers have not caught up with it. I would very much recommend it to teachers for their use and use in their classes."
