Trinity College and Binary Designs joined forces on Friday 11th of February to host the Trinity Syllabus Update, held at the 4MBS Performance Studio. The workshop opened with Karen Henderson of Binary Designs taking music teachers through some of the repertoire on the new Duet Syllabus of Trinity College. The teachers sight-read duets of various styles including Latin, Jazz and Classical works. This segment of the morning also included discussions on the importance of incorporating duets into piano lessons. These benefits included the development of ensemble skills, good rhythm and also the social aspects of ensemble playing. The music teachers started a conga line to the tea and coffee to the strains of a latin Conga.
Mary De Vries conducted the second half of the workshop discussing some of the updates in the Trinity Syllabus such as the introduction of a Diploma of Conducting and introduction of the First Level Concert Piano Certificate. As none of the piano exams offer this program, this would prove especially beneficial for younger students who hadn’t performed much in public. Mary also brought up the importance of presentation in exam situations particularly in diploma exams and also went through some of the guidelines for ACTL and LTCL recitals.
The morning’s activities culminated with a performance of the Queen of Sheba by four teachers on two grand pianos, each playing one part. The workshop was greatly enjoyed by all involved with friendships made and ideas shared with a promise to run another duet workshop to go through the more advanced duet repertoire.
